Hi,

I've written the script I was talking about. Slightly more involved than I hoped, but a fun challenge nonetheless. It can be downloaded as KillIndexedPlaylists.zip. Unpack the zip file and use the script from your downloads folder, or put it on the desktop, or see https://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/downloadfaqmx.php to see how to allow it to be run from the Music menu bar.

I've set it to ignore any list that ends with a value of 50 or above thinking such values are more likely to be years and intentional. This max value can be edited in the script if needs be.

Note there is an odd issue where the last playlist removed remains on display until you close and reopen music, but that aside the script works as intended.

Hello joeysudyka,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

Can you tell us more about how these playlists are being created or where they came from?

You can use these steps to delete a playlist:

"Delete a playlist

If you delete a playlist, the songs in the playlist remain in your library and on your computer.

  1. In the Music app on your Mac, do any of the following:
    • Select a playlist in the sidebar on the left, then press the Delete key.
    • Control-click a playlist in the sidebar on the left, then choose Delete from Library.

2. Click Delete to confirm."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Create, edit, and delete playlists in Music on Mac - Apple Support

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Cheers!

It would appear to be some kind of synchronisation bug. I have a Windows script for cleaning these type of playlists which could potentially be recreated in AppleScript. Essentially you simply check the name of each playlist in turn and if it ends with some digits you delete it. The danger is you might have some playlists in this form that you actually want to keep, but they could be renamed first, and ideally you would backup the library before you start so you could pull them back if needed. Not at my Mac right now, but I could have a go at writing one tomorrow.

We certainly understand, joeysudyka,

The macOS doesn't include a feature which would allow you to delete multiple playlists at once. You're welcome to share any feature requests you may have with Apple directly here: Product Feedback - Apple

You may also consider contacting Apple Support to help you to isolate the reason why you have so many duplicate playlists. You can find their contact details here: Contact - Official Apple Support

Take care!

I am having similar problems. I'm finding multiple playlist duplications. I am also finding up to 98x duplicated songs in my personal playlists which was the culprit in filling up my icloud and reaching my Apple Music song limit!

I had to carefully hand delete before I could even try to trouble shoot. After the days it took to do that (and severe lack of faith in this whole Apple Music situation) I am now seeing that there is something severely wrong with the sync. It has not updated or synced years worth of personal playlists....suddenly missing. I can see some playlists appear to not be up-to-date from about 2018! That's years of painstaking work. It lost all of my ORIGINAL artwork that I created for each playlist (these are my own photographs I created that are in my library) but it's inconsistent. Some playlists retain artwork while most do not. Some playlists have more up to date music while others seem to be out of sync for years. I cannot find the pattern. In addition, and the most puzzling, are two playlists in particular that won't sync at all. I can see it on my desktop but not on my phone. It just doesn't sync. I am triple checking if there are any other missing ones. These also happen to be the playlists that I have used and updated the most in recent months as they're seasonal. They would most likely be comprised of entirely Apple Music songs so I cannot understand how these are not in my Apple Music subscription and backed up on the cloud? I spend 6 straight hours at the Genius bar and stumped all of them. They just don't seem to know. This sync bug seems pretty deadly.
