Receiving texts not intended for me

I don’t share my Apple ID with anyone, but I get texts (sms) that are clearly not for me, but for somebody I know. Let me give an example: It’s my cousin’s birthday. I get an sms where her mother-in-law wishes her a happy birthday. I don’t have the mother-in-law’s phone number, she doesn’t have mine - heck, I barely know her. On my phone it looks like a group chat in messages (sms) between my cousin, her mother-in-law and me. But I’m sure, she did not intend to send it to me, it’s just downright weird. And see, now I’m worried that it also happens the other way around. Help, what the h… is going on?

Since you are not sharing Apple ID and the texts are SMS it is clear that the sender is selecting a group. Please, see the pic below. You need to inform your cousin and train the sender. It will not happen the other way around unless you do the same as done by the sender.

In a Group SMS or Group MMS, each recipient will receive individual text and will not know the other recipients.

But in Group iMessage it will be sent as a group and every other person will know who all has received the message.
