Launchpad - how to delete items ?

Hello,

Used Migration Assistant to move the iTunes Library from old iMAC High Sierra to new Mac Book Pro 13 M2 Monterey. I specified that the only thing to transfer was the Music Folder in High Sierra. It did transfer the music ok (great !) but brought along lots and lots and lots of other things that I did not ask for and are cluttering my brand new Mac.

Among those I have, on the Launchpad, lots of icons for applications that I do no longer have on the new system. They look like shortcut icons (see picture attached).

My question : How do I remove those spurious icons from the Launchpad ?

Many thanks in advance for any help available.

Regards,

Nunof

Hi Luis,

Indeed I missed your last post. I have not tried it but I do not think it would have solved my problem.

Meanwhile I have solved the problem as follows.

Fact is that there was more than one Applications Folder on my Mac. Migration Assistant created, in my User Account, an additional Applications Folder with references to applications that were in the old computer and not on the new one.

Now, Launchpad creates and lists an icon for every application, irrespective of what Applications Folder it is listed on.

I deleted the spurious Applications Folder created in my User Account by Migration Assistant and my Launchpad is now perfectly clean : it only contains icons for the applications appearing in the 'official' Applications Folder of my Mac.

Thanks for all the support.

P.S. If there was a means to assign NEGATIVE stars to an application I would have given -4 stars to Migration Assistant. Not -5 because it did correctly transfer my old iTunes Library onto Music (the single and only thing I have asked it to do). Apart from that, because it messes up with lots of things that you have clearly indicated you did not want it to touch, it is an inexhaustible source of problems that will take you days if not weeks to discover and correct after you have used it 😋

Thanks Luis.

Yes it is like in the iPhone. Pressing and holding make the icons shake. But, unlike in the iPhone, there is no X to delete.

Some, related to some applications that I had previously installed, do have an X allowing to delete. However, most, including the spurious generic shortcut-like icons that Migration Assistant brought over, do not have a X to delete.

It's kind of a cosmetic 'problem' but it still bothers me. Some day a solution will pop-up somewhere.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Luis,

I have just understood that what I have as Launchpad is the Launchpad that Migration Assistant brought over from the old computer to the new. No wonder that some icons point to applications that were in the old computer but not in the new one.

It seems that what I need to do is to delete the current Launchpad and create a new one that will contain icons related to the appliactions that I do have on the new computer.

I am going to investigate how to delete an entire Launchpad alltogether and then create a new one and the include reference icons in the new one.

Thanks again.

What you say about the Applications folder inside your home folder makes sense and was dealt with correctly.

I am sorry your migration did not go as expected. I have always had perfect experiences with Migration Assistant, so this comes as a surprise. I even once helped a friend, remotely in the

midst of the lockdown, migrate from an old mac using El Capitan (in fact, I first had to have her upgrade to El Capitan from Snow Leopard!) to an M1 Air running Big Sur, and it just worked…
