Volans (VL-UCQDMD) USB connections not recognised by my Mac mini

I recently purchased the VOLANS (VL-UCQDMD) USB and HDMI hub, noting that it supports Apple M1 chipset. However the only thing that seems to be working is the HDMI extension and the recharging USB devices (as the hub has its own power supply).

When I connect a SanDisk 3.0 USB or external HDD, they are not recognised by my Mac (however they work connected directly to the Mac). Should this not be plug and play?

I raised this with Volans support and there are two USB host plugs, the second one is linked to the USB ports and HDMI 2 and 3, the first one is only linked to HDMI 1 and DP. Simple solution, use Host 2 and everything works!
