New M1 Macbook Pro w/Monterey 12.4, can't message non Apple user

Got a new M1 Macbook Pro. When I try to message a non Apple user, the message does not go thru. I can message them from the old Macbook Pro and an iMac. Just not the new MBP. I assume it means the new MBP is not sending SMS only using iCloud/Apple's format. What setting do I need to change?

TIA!

  1. Sign into iCloud on your Mac and iPhone using the same Apple ID
  2. On your Mac open the Messages app, and open the Preferences from the top bar. Under the iMessage tab, ensure that the option "You can be reached for messages" on your phone number is enabled
  3. On your iPhone go to Settings > Messages > Text Messages Forwarding
  4. You should see your Mac listed - tap on the toggle to enable it.

LeroyDouglas, Thanks for trying to help! The general info links you sent are helpful to a new user. I've used Messages on both MacOS and iOS for years. This is a problem associated with a new MBookPro under Monterey. I can text a non Apple user from my iPhone, iMac and older MBookPro...just NOT the new one I just purchased. I've checked many of the usual things and logged out and back in to iCloud on the new laptop. Still not sending to non Apple user. (iPhone sends just fine). there's something about linking the new Monterey laptop to the iPhone and I need to do...but don't know how!

Problem persists.
