Many external editors need TIFF files (Topaz AI is one). This was handled well in Aperture, which first created a TIFF duplicate then linked to the editor. Cn I manually duplicate a RAW, convert to tiff and edit within Photos? related, can Preview be an external editor in PHOTOS?
If you try edit a Raw in an external editor it will send a tiff for you.
So yes, you can duplicate the raw, no need to make any conversion, and a tiff will arrive at the external.

I am using the External Editors extension in Photos to edit RAW files in an external editor.
When I open a RAW photo for editing in Photos and select the External Editors extension, I am getting the choice how to send the photo to the external editor - as the original RAW file, as a TIFF, or as a JPEG. For example:
which editor? My Photo App does not make this offer..

External Editors has to be installed from the App Store (for a little fee).After installing it, you will see it in the Editor window, when you open the Extensions pane by clicking the three points (...) in the toolbar. I prefer to call apps as editing extensions to "open with".
