Photo booth is not recording videos on my MacBook Air

Photo booth has stopped being able to record videos on my computer for some time (around a year). I used it quite often so I really want to get this resolved.

I use a MacBook Air—Model A2337. It still has the video option inside of the app (in the bottom left corner), and I can switch to the video function—as in the red button switches icons from “camera” to “video”. But once I click the red button the start the video feed freezes, and once the countdown starts the timer never goes above 0:00, and the feed stays frozen. There is no way to end the “recording”, so I always have to quit the app. Oh, and if I go to "File" in the top bar it doesn't give an option to start a video, only take a photo.

I don't know if this is on purpose or by accident. I also don't know if there is a way to update it (it currently is version 11.0 (1127) and is copyrighted 2005-2020). Since it is 2022, I was wondering if I should update it somehow. Also, if the app is being fazed out I would like to know since I don't want to loose the things in the app.

Thanks for the help.

Hi there EzeraCatt,

If you're unable to record videos in Photo Booth on your Mac, there are some steps we can take to help isolate the cause of the issue.

To start, you'll want to be sure your Mac is updated to the latest macOS version it can run. If needed, learn more about updating your Mac here: Update macOS on Mac

Next, have you tested your Mac camera in any other apps? Try these steps: If your built-in camera isn’t working on your Mac

Also, does the issue persist when your Mac is booted up in safe mode?

Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

Safe mode is particularly useful when you're trying to resolve an issue that doesn't seem to be associated with using any particular app. As always, keeping your software up to date is the first step toward resolving any software issue.

Have a look at this support article to learn how to use safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers!
