I deleted old contacts from my phone but every time I connect to icloud it downloads them again to the iphone not once but several times so I have many duplicate entries and many contacts that I don't want on the phone. How can I stop this?

It may be worth logging into iCloud via a browser and seeing what you have listed in your Contacts on the web browser. Are your contacts listed there multiple times. If you don’t need that contact anymore at all, try deleting them the web.
