Syncing new music to Ipod Touch without syncing entire library

I'm at the end of my rope--I bought some new music on iTunes. I save my music to my PC--I do NOT have it saved to the Cloud--I have iCloud turned OFF on my computer and all of my Apple devices. I have iTunes set to sync ONLY CHECKED SONGS AND VIDEOS (don't have any videos).

I synced my music to my iPad without any issue.

However, when I try to sync my music to my iPod Touch (7th generation), I keep getting the message "Sync Library is Off" which I never got before. So after about an hour of trying to figure it out, and finding no help anywhere I decided to see what happened if I turned it on. Instead of syncing only the music I want on it, my ENTIRE library is now on the iPod, including Christmas music, and other unchecked music I'm not into right now. Near as I can figure out, even though I have iCloud turned OFF it somehow downloaded everything from iCloud.

All I want on this iPod Touch is the music I have selected that I have saved on my PC (All music that I have purchased--NOT from Apple Music). I do have a free subscription to Apple Music through a family subscription but the only time I use it is to see what new music has been released. I don't use it for listening but it has never been a problem before.

I do not want my music synced across all devices.

I do not want my entire music library on my iPod Touch.

All I want to be on my iPod Touch is the music I have checked/selected from my personal library saved on my PC.

I've never had a problem with this before. I've always just plugged the iPod into my computer and the sync worked flawlessly.

Does anybody have any idea what I can do? Thanks in advance.

In order to add only what you want to your device, you need to set specific options for that device. Perhaps they need to be checked, to ensure they are as you want them. To begin with, since you're not using Apple Music, I suggest that it will be one less complication if you leave it (and Sync Library) turned off.

There are two ways (as opposed to methods) of achieving what you want. You may want to combine them:

    1. use Sync only ticked songs and videos. With this method, you can simply untick the songs that you don't want (such as Christmas songs) in your iTunes Library and they get removed form the iPod at the next Sync. Ticking them (on again) will add them back. The disadvantage of this option is that it will affect other users of the same iTunes Library
    2. Sync selected playlists, artists, albums and genres. With this option, you specifically decide which items you ant on your iPod. If a song is in a selected genre, or on a selected album, it goes onto your iPod. (If you're also using the sync only ticked songs option, then obviously the song need to be ticked as well, even if it's in a selected list)

So let's start check the settings:

  • Connect your iPod to your iTunes Library and click on the device icon once it appears in iTunes:

  • selecting the device icon will display the Device/Settings/Summary pane:

  • if you want to make use of the sync only ticked songs option, make sure that the Sync only ticked songs and videos option is ticked, as shown above, but remember the caution that I mentioned previously
  • now select the Device/Settings/Music pane (1.)

  • make sure that the Sync Music box (2.) is ticked
  • to control exactly what goes onto your iPod, in the way you have indicated, click on Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres radio button (3.). Note that the sections in 4 will only be displayed once you select the "selected" button in 3. If you choose Entire music library, then all the content of iTunes will be added to your device
  • select the various items that you want on your iPod from the lists in sections 4. That is:
    • Playlists
    • Artists
    • Albums
    • Genres
  • you need to scroll down your iTunes screen to see the last two lists
  • click the Apply (or Sync) button in the lower right corner of your iTunes window (not shown in the screenshots)

That's it. In order for a song to be added to your iPod, it must be in one of the lists that you have selected. If you create your own Playlists in iTunes Library, you can use those and have only what you want, regardless of any other family member's choices for their devices.

LibraryGirl123,

Have you since been able to turn off the Sync Library feature? Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music - Apple Support

Is your iPod touch all up to date? Update iOS on iPod touch - Apple Support

How about iTunes on your PC? Update to the latest version of iTunes - Apple Support

Should you still be unable to sync just selected content to your iPod touch, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Contact - Official Apple Support They'd be in the best position to look into this particular behavior further.

Take care.

I apologize for the delay in responding. Unfortunately your link does not help me at all--I know all of that information. As I said in the original post, previously I had no problems syncing my iPod Touch--What was synced on the iPod were only the checked songs that I had in my computer library which is exactly what I wanted. This time it went haywire and everything is on it--I mean, I like my Christmas tunes, but not in July :) So thank you--I appreciate the help, but you didn't provide me with anything I didn't already know. Cheers!

Thank you. My iPod Touch and iTunes are both up-to-date.

But as I said in my original message, I have Sync Library turned off--which is how I've had it set since day 1 and previously had no problems. I don't want to sync my music across devices. I don't necessarily have the same music on my iPod Classic and my iPad and my iPod touch.

When I turned on Sync Library to see what would happen--Because all I was seeing was an error message saying "Sync Library is turned off", that's when it put my ENTIRE library on the iPod Touch, and not just the checked music that I had selected. Neither my iPad nor my iPod Classic had this problem--They both synced flawlessly as usual.

But now that I have Sync Library turned off, I can't access any music on the iPod Touch. It seems to be I either have to have it all or I get to have none of it.

Not sure why Apple assumes a person wants the same music everywhere.

As for contacting Apple Support ... easier said than done. They sent me here.

Thanks for trying!
