access iMac from eviction

I had to evict tenants from office space for months of non-payment and they never picked up office furniture or computer. Sheriff said since they didn’t pay back rent and never picked up office equipment, I can claim it. The 2020 iMac 24 is tied to the clients account so did I just end up with a boat anchor that’s destined for the landfill or can it be used?

I recall that not being as absolute an issue with Macs as it is with Apple's iDevices. Before heading to the dump, look at the last line of this Apple Support article:

How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support

In this case, a letter from the sheriff's office stating that you legally acquired the property through an eviction default may take the place of a proof of purchase.

At least call Apple Support (we are end users, not Apple) and get their take on the matter.

Thanks Allan, I went through all the steps that the link provided, but no Bueno. Even when talking to Apples techs, they didn’t think it would be a problem since I had all documents from courts stating I won the case in the eviction and the tenant owed me back pay. Unfortunately the tech side of Apple said I can not be transferred over to the department that handles activation to talk and they can only provide a link.

This seems to be where the confusion starts. The link to send the info to the department for activation issues only provides basic fields to fill out asking where the purchase was made….date of purchase and receipt documents I can provide for proof of purchase. It would not let me move to the next step unless I added info into each field. So I just guessed and tried to explain in the field asking what steps I tried in order to activate the computer. I attached the court documents and sent the info to Apple.

They replied with a sort of generic statement saying I need to send proof of purchase and place I purchased with date, but did give another link that let me explain further along with options to upload documents. I did go into further detail and again upload the court documents. I received another generic response stating I need to upload proof of purchase and place I purchased with date. It doesn’t look like they even read the information I sent. If they don’t first see a proof of purchase and place I purchased with date, they just send out a generic email saying no.

Apple could at least have the courtesy to say we read over your information and even though you won the eviction, we will not be able to help.

Thanks again for your help Allan

They had a Amazon shopping spree just when they moved in. All their items are new and the the Macs had boxes and the one they left has matching SN with the box. I know that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be stolen, but all items didn’t give any indication of being stolen. The mailbox was full of letters addressed to at least 10 different LLC’s addressed to their unit and I’m not sure what they had going on, but it didn’t seem like a legit business. I was doing work on building as they were moving in and noticed the dumpster was full of boxes from shipments. I’m just trying to recoup lawyers fees and back rent that they cost me through garnishments or any property I can sell. It’s too bad that a new iMac will be nothing more than a paperweight.

Thanks for your reply and yes, that’s what I expected. It would not be with my time to attempt to ask the former owner to help. I’m sure they are not happy about being evicted from my office space. They did not pay for months and I’m sure I’m the bad guy. I did find it strange that they left so many things, but from what I could tell, they were scamming people and they have moved to another state to start it all over again! I guess I could try Apple support and send them court papers, but I’m sure that will not go far either.
