Montery 12.4 and command line tools update not accepting my password.

I've been trying to clear the red software update icon for two days. First it was just the command line tools update. I kept getting that outrageous, ridiculous "Not An Owner" error. Since I paid $1200 for this machine I'm pretty sure I'm an owner. Now Monterey 12.4 is added to the update list. I can finally get to the little window where System Update requires a password. I type it in and the window shakes like I entered incorrectly. (But no error message confirming.)

I've rechecked the password by logging out of the machine and signing back in with it. No problem there. So I didn't forget my password and shouldn't have to reset it. And I've typed it into the System Update window that's rejected me at least a dozen times. S L O W L Y. So what do I do now?

My machine is a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro. I wish Apple would quit rolling out updates I can't install. Thanks for any help.

But are you the administrator in addition to being the primary user? See System Preferences > Users & Groups > your username > ☑︎ Allow user to administer this computer.

Product installations will prompt you as the administrator to input your regular user password in order for the installation to proceed.

Judging from this question and a couple of your other posting on Empty Space issue - what exactly changed on the computer between the earlier posting on Empty Space issues and this now ?.

As for what to do going forwards.

If the suggestion for @VikingOSX does not work and the suggestion put forth the Restart Setup Assistant to Create Admin is beyond the users Comfort level.

There is only one other suggestion I can offer.

Reset Computer Password  for the Administrator

Apple Silicon M1 Computer

1 - Choose Apple menu > > Shut Down.

2 - Press and hold the power button on your Mac until you see “Loading startup options.”

3 - Click Options, then click Continue.

4 - Top Tool Bar >> Utilities >> Terminal

5 - Type resetpassword as one word and no spaces

6 - Press Return key

7 - Follow the prompts and remember the New Password

Well, since the computer was or is already running Monterey 12.3.1 ( as per earlier posting of your ) - that would have required the Admin Account Password which seems to the worked - right ?

Predicated on that as being accurate - that same Admin Account Password should still work for the Monterey 12.4 upDate.

As for doing a Time Machine Backup - that should be done frequently and of Sure before attempting any update or Password changes.

As a Last Resort action

The below Terminal Command and suggest Copy and Paste into the Terminal Application and then press the Return key to execute the below command

 sudo softwareupdate -i -a -R

Credit goes to @leroydouglas

flag definition:

-i Install

-a All appropriate updates

-R Automatically restart (or shut down) if required to complete installation)

Thanks so much for this. Several weeks ago I was able to install the upgraded OS after clearing space and waiting a few days for space in that special category (I forget what it’s called) to make itself available. That’s the only change between then and now.

This time I was thinking about doing a Time Machine backup and then reinstalling Monterey as an upgrade. Should I try that before resetting the system password as you suggest?

Thanks but this didn't work. I can't get past the step where I'm setting up the new user. The error I'm getting is as follows:

Computer account creation failed.

Your computer account could not be created with the name and password specified. Please try again.

I did try again with several different combinations of name and password until I decided to stop wasting my time.

I was able to update Monterey by reinstalling the update in recovery mode. So now I'm back to square one: Unable to install command line tools updates 13.2 13.3 and 13.4 because I'm "not an owner." I tried each individually and all three together. Not an owner. It's my machine and its not affiliated with any organization or IT department. But I'm not an owner. I paid $1200 for the **** thing. But I'm not an owner.

At this point I'm on the phone with Apple support. Thanks for trying to help.
