All of my desktop files disappeared

All of the files on my main Desktop disappeared. They were not trashed, nor on another desktop (I don't really use multiple desktops normally). I checked iCloud Drive and only older Desktop files were accessible. No other files on my Macbook Pro were affected. Unfortunately I did not have Time Capsule set up (obviously I do now!). Has anyone recently encountered this and have a fix?
