How to change the name of my AirTag?

I have given my AirTag a custom name. I am trying to change the name and when I go through the name change process and type in the new name the “done” button is greyed out and won’t let me change it. How do I get this change processed?

Hello Vollaw522,

If you are using your iPhone, Power cycle the iPhone using these instructions: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support While simple, this can refresh the iOS, apps and connections.

After restarting, try and rename the AirTag using these steps found here: Set up your AirTag using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support:

1. Open the Find My app, then tap the Items tab.
2. Tap the AirTag whose name or emoji you want to change.
3. Scroll down and tap Rename Item.
4. Select a name from the list or select Custom Name.
5. Type a custom name for your AirTag and select an emoji.
6. Tap Done.

If you are still not able to complete the name change, do you have any other Apple devices you can use to try and work through the steps?

Cheers.

Hey there Vollaw522,

Let's continue following the steps found in Set up your AirTag using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

"If you can't set up your AirTag

  1. Make sure that your device is ready for setup.
  2. If the setup animation disappeared, press the side button or Sleep/Wake button on your iPhone to put your device to sleep. Then wake and unlock your iPhone. Wait up to 15 seconds, and the animation should reappear.
  3. If you have multiple AirTags to set up, make sure that only one is near your device at one time.
  4. Remove and then replace the battery in your AirTag.*
  5. If your AirTag still won't connect to your device, reset your AirTag

Learn what to do if you see a message that says the AirTag is connected to another Apple ID."

Although the title references being unable to set up your AirTag, the steps provided should resolve the behavior you're seeing.

If you continue to have the same issue after taking these steps, you'll want to Contact Apple Support for help.

Have a good one!
