This is a constant annoyance. I keep having the Desktop folder disappear from the sidebar in Finder and the file dialogue. I have added it in Finder preferences and by dragging the folder to the sidebar. But after a few days it's gone. The presences have been changed to show the folder is not selected, but I know nobody changed it. I am the only person who uses this computer.
How do I get the Desktop folder to stay in the sidebar?

what exact macOS
old issue, new issue, what changed?
Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus
all known to cause issues on the macOS
Try a SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support to sort anomalies
Takes a bit longer to get to the login screen, does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, font cache, etc.
Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.
In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a reboot will put it back to normal mode.
The current stable release of Monterey including bug fixes, is macOS 12.4

I did say what exact Mac and what exact OS. I provided a screen shot of he About MacOS window. It is a 2020 MacBook Air with M1 running Monterey 12.4.
I will try what you said. I don’t have any anti virus software. Or VPN. I don’t know what counts as an optimizer or cleaner so I don’t know if I have such a program running, but I doubt it.
