OS Monterey - Mac Mail stuck in loop after attempting to add an Exchange account

A failed attempt to add a Microsoft 365 account in Mac mail (using the Mail type Exchange) has triggered a endless loop of account creations under Internet Accounts. I can see the OS creating Exchange inactive account after Exchange inactive account, and I cannot stop the loop or delete them quick enough.


I have tried this thread (to go into safe mode and delete) but the accounts still come back and dont stop in safe mode. Mac os big sur - keeps adding same inacti… - Apple Community


I have tried clearing the SQL database of internet accounts (via SQLlite browser) but it doesn't stop the root process that's stuck creating the accounts. (see https://community.jamf.com/t5/jamf-pro/removing-accounts-from-internet-accounts/m-p/179654)


Anyone else have this issue, and a way to interrupt this, apart from maybe uninstalling Mac Mail?

I tried to re-add the Exchange account to see if this would interrupt this loop. It didnt. It just started adding the new Exchange account over and over. The loop continued.

I don't see anyway out of this apart from creating a fresh profile/account and transferring settings/files to the new account and hope the new account doesn't carry forward any of this unwanted behaviour.

You are not going to uninstall a baked in application.


Not sure if I fully grok the issue, however verify you have Safari set as the default browser, and compare your results setting up your account.
