MacBook Pro 2017 running Catalina. For the last 10 days the bottom of the screen has 7 dark patches about 1 inch high over the dock and now the screen is much darker unless brightness is turned up to maximum. Battery is draining faster. Battery cycle count is 172, condition normal. Is there anything I can do or should I book a repair?

It sounds like a backlight issue, unfortunately there isn't much you can do.
In the past this was potentially caused by the cable connecting the screen to the motherboard being degraded, but your model should not have this known issue.
Better bring it in to get it looked at.

As armigu mentioned, it may be back light issue. you'd better take your MacBook Pro to your local retail AppleStore Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined it.
