slow download of new email on mac
only happens on mac, downloads immediately on my iPad

Have you tried to restart your Mac?
Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support?
If the issue persists after a restart, see if it persists while in Safe Mode.
How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
If the slow downloading issue is still showing, temporarily remove your Mail account (Remove email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support), then re-add it: Add an email account to Mail on your Mac - Apple Support.
Do any other internet services seem slow, such as using Safari to visit websites?
