Try an Apple adapter instead of the 3rd. party one.

Are you using the original Apple USB cable and adapter, that came with the iPhone?

Did you make sure that the docking port is free of any debris or lint?

Have parts of the hardware or the battery been replaced by Apple or an Apple Service Provider?
