We understand that you're unable to send messages from your phone number rather than your email address.
If you go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, do you have your phone number checked here?
Do you have a current text messaging plan with your carrier?
If so, you can turn off iMessage, restart your iPhone then go to Settings > Messages and enable iMessage again to refresh its settings.
