"Music" app playing songs at lower pitch

I've had this issue consistently in the past... month or two, I think.

Sometimes, when I play a song through the "Music" app, the playback will be at a much lower pitch than it should be. This results in songs being distorted-from what I can tell, the speed of the songs isn't changing, just that the music is being pitched down.

I notice this most often when I use the "shuffle" option in my smart playlists. Restarting the app or even just playing a different song and then going back to the original one will often fix the issue. Pausing and resuming a song with the pitch problem doesn't fix the issue, keeping the incorrect pitch until I restart or try something else. This issue also has never happened on my iPod's music app, nor does it persist on specific songs... it seems to occur randomly.

How do I fix this issue? What's even causing it? I don't think there'd be any setting that would cause random songs to be pitched down when I shuffle through my music library (which is all local files).

I just wanted to post again and say this happened another time, today with the song "Beautiful" by A.G. Cook (which I noticed quickly since that song has artificially pitched-up vocals, making the pitch down more apparent).

I was able to find out that not only is the pitch decreasing, but the speed is as well... which makes me think the real problem is an issue with the playback speed. Pulling up a "seconds" counter and comparing it to the speed that seconds were going by on my Music app, it seems like the song was playing back at about 90% speed. Still not sure what is causing this.

Also worth noting that I tried skipping to the next song and it was also playing at that slow speed. Closing the app and restarting it fixed the speed problem, as it always does. I looked online and saw some people report something like this, but those reports involved streaming through apple music-mine is playing the songs straight from my computer, saved locally.

I don't believe there is an issue ever logged with Apple Music about Music being distorted when playing. So I would suggest the following tips to follow:

  1. Check your EQ settings. You may have changed it once before and forgot to change it, and sometimes different EQ's can alter how a song sounds.
  2. Check how you stream your Music in the Audio Quality section of the app in Settings. You may have your Music streaming set to something other than 'Normal'. Check this for both your Wifi and Cellular streaming.
  3. Check Dolby Atmos if it is enabled. Dolby Atmos has to this day been inconsistent with volume, being quieter than a simple lossless or Apple Digital Master song.
  4. Check your headphones (if used) or your speakers. You may have reached a threshold in sound volume or composition for either of them causing something to go wrong in them. For example, AirPods can be affected and distorted when there are certain loud sounds played in a short amount of time.

  1. My EQ is off, and has been off since always, essentially. I just checked to make sure.
  2. Music quality is set to maximum. There are no settings like "crossfade," "sound enhancer," or "sound check" turned on.
  3. "Dolby Atmos" doesn't appear to be an option in my preferences. As I said though, it has nothing to do with loudness, just pitch.
  4. My speakers have nothing to do with it. It's the song itself. If I skip to another song, the pitch is fixed-As well, if I go back to the same song, the pitch is fixed. It's just that the pitch will randomly be lower while shuffling through multiple songs for certain tracks. The pitch difference doesn't happen elsewhere, such as YouTube or other applications.

Ok, by connecting externally to a TV through an HDMI cable you can try a couple of things that focus on Apple:

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable through both ends with multiple trials to see if it would resolve itself.
  2. I would try isolating the Mac from the TV and try playing the Music through Apple TV (if you have the product) or through the Apple TV app (if you have a Samsung Smart TV).

Other possible fixes I can see happening through Samsung and its TV settings. To not overstretch and throw assumptions into the situation, I would consult with Samsung TV support or scroll through your TV settings, especially through your latency and Audio settings.

Since it's hard to describe in words, here are screenshots I've taken of my audio settings for Music, as well as my equalizer (which is turned off). I don't see any options for things like "Hi-Res Lossless". This issue only happens in iTunes, so I don't think it'd be due to a setting outside of it–though if you have an idea of where to look, I can check.

My music app is on 1.2.4.3 and my MacBook is on 12.4 Monterey. It doesn't look like an update is available for either.

I checked online and it seems like those audio quality settings may only show up when sent to an external audio device.

My Music app is outputting to my computer internally (see here):

And then I currently have my output set to a TV which I connected through an HDMI cable, see here:

Edit: It's possible the reason it says 11.2 on the discussion thread is because I accidentally marked the wrong device when creating this thread, which is my bad.

Wanted to update just to say that skipping forwards and backward doesn't actually fix the issue. I just had the issue right now-was listening to Kanye West's "Roses" (which came up on shuffle) and noticed that Kanye's voice seemed low-pitched. Skipped to the next song and skipped back and it was still low-pitched. Quit Music, opened the app again, and then navigated to the song "Roses," and it played at a normal pitch.

Hi again SuddenlyWolf,

Thank you for the clarification on your issue. I too see a new possible cause of issue for your Audio Distortion. In the same Audio Quality section in settings, you mentioned that you have everything set up to maximum. Do you have the appropriate hardware for that setting? Hi-Res Loseless can cause issues like distortion and overload on speakers or devices if the warning is bypassed with the incorrect hardware.

I'll certainly try the things you're suggesting and see what happens. I haven't had this issue with Spotify yet, on any device, nor have I with other sources of streaming (Soundcloud, YouTube, in any other apps).

The thing that confuses me is I'm just not sure at all how the cable or TV would relate specifically to the Music app. If audio was regularly randomly being outputted at a low pitch, it would make sense. But, for instance, I'm never watching a YouTube video, and then suddenly the video is playing at a lower pitch (I can verify this because sometimes I have two things playing, like a video and music on shuffle, and then a random song plays at a low pitch while the audio of the other audio source is normal).

If all audio was being messed up, I'd imagine it was an issue at some point along the transfer of audio from my computer to its output, but the audio is only messed up in the specific circumstance of "occasionally, for random songs, in the Music app, which is fixed with a restart" (further implying it's some issue in the app itself).
