Arrow keys not working on MacBook Air 2017

I recently updated my computer (from Sierra? 10 point something to Monterey 12.4) and since then, the arrow keys no longer work. I have checked settings, searched for answers, watched videos and nothing has helped fix the issue. If I do hit the arrow key, it puts a rectangle around the window that is open and the space bar instead of adding a space, moves back one letter and doesn't work. When I try to click in the area, the cursor doesn't allow me to continue typing. I then have to restart my computer and be very careful not to touch the arrow keys. Other than resetting my computer back to factory settings, I'm not sure what else I can do. Any suggestions? Thank you

What app are you using?

None of our Macs have ever done that. In Excel an arrow keys moved the cell pointer, in Word the right arrow moves to next letter and in text files does the same as Word.

What are you expecting the arrow keys to do?

You made a big leap for OS version 10 to 12, and things may have changed substantially. In fact, I'm sure things did change a lot in that size jump.

Keeping fingers off the wrong key is a learning curve thing.

The arrow keys do not work with anything. Safari, PDF documents, files, photos, the programs I use for work, nothing. I use the arrow keys to move through the apps that I use. Arrow keys instead of the touchpad or a mouse) are easier to use with arthritis and hand surgery. I still don't understand why the space bar has issues if I accidentally hit an arrow key. In the settings for the keyboard, it doesn't show arrow keys in the pictures. Any suggestions before I redo my computer?
