14" MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) USB-C port not working

Hi All,

After long consideration I bought MBP last week.

I'm using first left USB-C port for charging the laptop and next to it to my external monitor via USB-C to HDMI cable. Everything was working fine.

However after few days I realised my laptop wasn't charging. I moved the charger to another port and it works. I also tried to move USB-C to HDMI to the port in question but no video output.

I looked it up online and apparently a lot of people have this issue due to Apple silicon not having dedicated SMC unlike previous MacBooks? I'm very shocked that for a laptop that costs 2K having such a simple issue like this.

I restarted my laptop as others suggested online and it works again.

This is very risk as I could be using external HDD for example and my data could get corrupted or even worse.

I changed my setup in the meantime having PD and video output via USB-C from my Dell D6000 dock.

Yesterday I had a similar issue again on the second left side port. This time there was video output but no PD.

Is Apple aware of this issue? Is this software related that will be fixed in the future or design flaw?

Because restarting my laptop every time this happens isn't really a true fix.

Thanks

My specs:

14" Macbook Pro

8-Core CPU

14-Core GPU

16GB Unified Memory

512GB SSD Storage

Mac OS etc all up to date

You can run the Diagnostic—

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

You have a limited 14-days for a full refund or exchange for one that works out of the box as expected.

If no insight or resolve I would certainly try:

— Shut down, close the lid 30 secs+ , reboot as normal.

—If no resolve try SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support to sort anomalies.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

I did diagnostics but it returned with no issues found..I need to restart the machine to run diagnostics which also clears the issue (so far) so not sure if it can catch it if it's not HW related..

Regarding refund/exchange - Can I just walk into the store and exchange it?

Also using the machine in safe mode but seems to be working OK for now..

I think the issue is intermittent so hard to replicate.
