System Data taking up 1 TB of storage

I am constantly out of storage. I pretty much run everything on Dropbox since I operate on both a laptop and iMac. lately I am running on the ends of storage capacity and I keep synching more and more things to the dropbox cloud and not on my harddrive, but it doesn't seem to ever be enough. I checked today and it says I'm only using 1TB of storage on Documents (assuming that Dropbox), and 1TB of storage on System Data.

What is System Data and how can I reduce it?

Hi kimmydesign,

The System Data files houses data from applications, extensions (and their customization), disk images, and caches from all apps that have been downloaded to your computer. Despite its name, it does not house the operating files of MacOS. The system files also houses temporary files, which can be the cause of bloating that sector of your computer to take up 1TB of storage. Since the System Files domain is hidden away to users by default, you can access and manipulate the domain through this method:

  1. Open the Finder app, and on the top left bar hover over and click the 'Go' tab.
  2. Press the command key, and that will add another tab in the Go section called 'Library'.
  3. Click it, and you will be presented with System Data.

You can then sort the files by size if you like. If any files are deemed important for an app, the system will tell you but otherwise the contents of Library are free to purge.

Hi kimmydesign,

Sorry to not clarify but the whole domain will be called system data (Library at this point) and you'll be looking for things that say 'temporary' or 'caches' or anything that implies that. Also they shouldn't be empty, I just checked myself in my own Library folder and everything is there, including data from third party apps I downloaded like Microsoft Edge and Visual Studio.
