MAC OS 12.4 - Messages app out of sync with unread

Anytime that I turn the machine on, there are always unread messages in the Messages app. Why don't these state synchronized between MAC OS and iOS like my other iOS devices do? The only way to get rid of the unread message count is to literally read every single message on the MAC!
