Batch-converting photos from RAW/DNG/HEIC to JPEG in iOS Photos app ??
I cannot believe there is not a way to do this!
Apple, here is a good suggestion for you:
I have my Camera set to take photos in raw format. As a result, all my photos are raw and take 20MB.
A raw photo is about 25MB, versus 2.5MB in JPEG. I only need about 5% of my photos to be raw.
This means I find myself with 100GB worth of photos, when it could be only about 10GB.
This is a massive waste of space, (and increases my carbon footprint).
You will tell me: just switch the Camera app to JPEG format by default.
The thing is that I need raw by default, because I will rarely remember to switch from jpeg to raw, or I won't have the time, because the photo I'm taking is very much in the moment. Having to remember this, and having to do this every single time is also VERY cumbersome.
So no - I will keep raw as default.
Then, how do I reduce the size of the 95% photos in my Photos app in iOS?
There is not a way.
So my photos take about 100GB instead of the 10GB they could take. This is crazy.
Apple, you need to have a simple way to deal with this issue.
Adobe Lightroom has an easy solution for a similar problem: you can batch-convert large proprietary raw formats to DNG. This means I can reduce the amount of space my Sony Alpha photos take by about 80% in a matter of seconds. I just need to select all the photos and click "Convert to DNG" in a menu.
You could implement the same concept in the iOS Photos app: select all the photos that need to be converted from raw/DNG, click the share icon bottom-left, and tap "Convert to JPEG", or "Reduce file size".
Please, Apple. It's a no-brainer.
