My MacBook Air will not connect via HDMI to TV

Mac will not connect via HDMI to TV. Works at the computer shop where and icon appears on System Preferences, that does not show up here. The Display icon only shows the local display available. HDMI TV checked and works with other devices.

I just plugged in the mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter on my 2014 MacBook Air running Catalina. I connected the adapter with an HDMI 2.0 cable and ensured that the correct HDMI port was selected on the TV via the remote and on-screen setup. Then I powered up the Air and the Catalina login screen appeared full-screen on the TV.

After I signed in, I opened a video and switched the player to full screen, and the 4K UHD TV automatically upscaled the video.

What part of the above are you not doing to get HDMI output on your TV?
