Akai MPK261 won't connect to M1 Max Monterey 12.4 without USB hub

My Akai MPK261 won't connect to my 2021 M1 Max running Monterey 12.4 unless it's plugged into a USB hub first (rather than a USB C adapter or USB B to USB C cord). It's also causing problems with the keyboard not recognizing the sustain pedal's polarity.

Everything works as expected on my older MacBook Pro and I'm having the same issue with two separate MPK261 units.

Is anybody else having an issue with Akai and Monterey/12.4 or M1? I haven't been able to find anything useful from Akai and their tech support hasn't gotten back to me after a couple of weeks.
