pdf preview

after upgrading to Monterey 12.4, preview, and chrome, claim many (most?) pdf files are "damaged" and says I should "move it to the Trash" but I can view the same files, every one of them, just fine using "Quick Look" so the files are not actually damaged. I can also reset the xattr -d -r com.apple.quarantine, and this allows me to open it in preview but only once. The second time it's supposedly "damaged" again. This is on a 27" iMac 17,1 (late 2015). I don't have anything like this on my macBook pro running the same ios so I believe it must be something sideways on the iMac but what that would be I have no clue. I suspect the cache of meta-data used by the file systems security needs to be rebuilt or something along those lines.

I discovered on my own that if I open the pdf file from within the preview app - i.e. start preview and then tell it to open the pdf, it works. The issue only happens if I try to view the pdf (or image file) from finder. What this means is that some component of the iOS comes into play when using finder (and I assume the xattr flags are consulted by that component), but when opening from the preview app itself, said component and the xattr flags involved are bypassed. All this indicates a massive err on the side of caution, which on average might be a good thing, however in my case it has revealed - in my opinion as a professional software engineer, not well thought out design, and leads me to suspect iOS is more vulnerable than Apple is willing to make public. Not wasting my time proving it, but call me paranoid.

Q - " I contacted support, they had me run an AV scanner,"

A - Contacted who as Support ? Apple or some Third Party outfit ?

A - Apple Support would know better than to suggest running a AV = Antivirus Scanner

A - There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

Additionally, and specific to Big Sur macOS 11 and Monterey macOS 12, the Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User or “ Bad Actor “ Software.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

A - Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster and comprising the Operating System

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include CleanMyMac , This will include BitDefender

This will included Norton Antivirus , Sophos Av Software

Intego AntiVirus, McAfee, MacKeeper, Avast AntiVirus

Ad Guard, Webroot , ESET

The The Built in Security  is all that is required.
