Follow these instructions:

If your iPhone has iOS 15.2 or later installed, check out this link→How to reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when you forgot your passcode - Apple Support. Otherwise:

See this Apple support link→If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support

Or watch this companion video ⬇️

After restoring the phone using one of the methods above you can restore your most recent backup.

You should be able to remove/turnoff Lost Mode remotely by following the below steps if you are having trouble entering your passcode to unlock the phone on your iPhone screen:

  • Go to Web Browser and open icloud.com/find
  • Now Sign in with your Apple ID (The one that is used in your iPhone).
  • Click All Devices that you see at the top of window.
  • Choose the device that is currently in Lost Mode.
  • Then click on Lost Mode and select Stop Lost Mode to cancel lost mode on iPhone.

You can go to Use Lost Mode in Find My iPhone on iCloud.com - Apple Support for more information on this process as well.

In this case, yes, most likely if the person who stole the phone tried repeatedly to log in/tamper with the iPhone it would automatically lock itself to the point where it would state "Phone Unavailable." In this case you may sadly only be able to reset the phone to factory settings, like the option it gave, due to security reasons. Though, I would recommend contacting Apple Support directly and/or scheduling an appointment at your nearest Genius bar at Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple as they have more tools to look into the matter of the phone being locked.

If you are on the iCloud Find My iPhone page and when you click on Lost Mode and it asks for a phone number and then a message that will be shown on the phone instead of an option to stop lost mode (like you stated above) then it's possible that you are actually not in lost mode anymore. Is the physical phone screen still showing in lost mode (asking to enter the passcode/ Apple ID password)? Also, if you could send a screenshot of what the iPhone screen is showing that would be helpful as well to see whats happening.
