I took your advice.
- Uninstalled a couple of bits of software I had been testing
- Rebooted in Safe Mode.
- The machine went like a slug
- I ran EtreCheck, which showed this which was weird
Top Processes Snapshot by CPU:
Process (count) CPU (Source - Location)
WindowServer 273.42 % (Apple)
system_profiler (2) 43.38 % (Apple)
trustd (3) 33.26 % (Apple)
airportd 15.36 % (Apple)
syspolicyd 11.60 % (Apple)
- EtreCheck suggested a few things to delete which didn't exist
Clean up:

- EtreCheck noted some partially uninstalled applications which I deleted via the review button
com.google.keystone.user.xpcserviceReview…
tv.plex.playerReview…
com.skype.skype.shareagentReview…
com.google.keystone.user.agentReview…
- Nothing else in the report looked notable so I rebooted.
After rebooting, I ran another EtreCheck and it showed absolutely nothing that looked unusual or unexpected.
I'll post again if the issue hasn't gone away.
Note to self: Do a reboot cycle via safe mode when weirdness happens
