Suddenly I saw a message that the call failed and that I had to set up my phone to call using WiFi. This has never happened before and I was calling a number I have used many times before.
Are there advantages or disadvantages to this?

WiFi calling allows your phone to use the WiFi network to route calls if the cellular network is too weak. I really don't can't think of any disadvantages.
Wi-Fi calling is an option, that most cellular providers support, to reduce the amount of cellular data that you use with your iPhone.

Basically, if your Wi-Fi signal is stronger than your cellular one, would be the reason why it would "automatically" switches. If you don't prefer this feature, you can just disable the Wi-Fi calling option in Settings.
I do understand that, but I am home and my phone switches to my WiFi automatically, or at least has regularly done so in the past. What changed?
