Contact and Userid Images Disappearing

So I have seen some have experienced this issue already with no solution. I am seeing contact images disappear with a random string being added at the end of phone numbers or in the country field that starts with X-IMAGEHASH or X-ABADR. It also changes any numbers marked as "Mobile" to "Phone". It messes up using Siri to make calls or just trying to call someone with an impacted record because often it adds the string to the end of their number. I should add this can occur even if there is no image associated with the contact but interestingly it seems to be the same contacts every time despite there being no real commonality between them. A restore of contacts back to a time before this began happening had no impact. The next day the same thing occurred. To make things even more complicated my Userid picture on the Mac which references Photos also disappears at the same time. It seems to have something to do with anything that references Photos on the iCloud for the most part but why I could not tell you. Nothing (no third party apps) has access to my contacts or photos. It happens on all devices - iPad, iPhone, Mac M1 Max, Watch.

I updated all devices - Mac, IOS, Watch - everything to the versions just released. I haven't had the issue in the days since. I suspect it was a Mac issue but I wanted to make sure everything was in sync with the latest versions. It seems to have rectified the issue for me.

Originally I thought it had something to do with Signal given that was about the only other thing that messed with contacts. So make sure that is the latest version on all devices as it is on mine. For Onedrive I had to really dig to find all connections to it including deleting the app and instead of getting a new version from MS I downloaded the app from the Apple App Store. Note my issues with Onedrive happened after the Mac update to 12.5 (which cant be a coincidence because MS released updates on the same day) I am just trying to see if we cant collectively narrow down what causes it. But as of today it hasn't happened since.

Day 3 and still no contact issues - I will add one thing Apple also go me to do was create a new "me" contact too. I deleted the old one associated with "me" on the systems and created a new one. I noticed at that point whilst other contacts were still getting corrupted that one and its pic were not. It was after I did that that I removed an connections to MS Teams and I have yet to have an issue.

I had this same problem, but noticed that it only happened with contacts I had edited from my Mac (12.5.1), especially when adding a contact image. It would be fine throughout the day and suddenly mess up during the night. To fix this, I wrote two shortcuts (one to remove all contact images just to be sure, and another to remove X-tags from affected fields, available here). After this, I started adding contact images from my iPhone (15.6.1), and 72 hours later everything still seems fine.

so now, after a week on google contacts:

  • my contacts aren't getting jacked up, generally no change and google syncs fine
  • ONE EXCEPTION: on my iPhone if I go to settings my picture at the top (my iCloud picture) has reset. My contact card still shows my picture (as its on my google contact card) , and its set to my contact. My Mac shows my icloud picture, just my phone and iCloud.com showing blanks now for me.
  • Every other contact working fine

Yeah we all agree it works fine if you remove all contact images - but we shouldn't need to do that. I have been going over 4 days since I created a new "me" contact for myself and disconnected MS Teams from being able to access contacts on my IOS devices and since then no issues. Apple L2 support also tell me they have seen no corruption since to my data and if you guys confirm the same it may well be MS Teams is the culprit.

so, may be a find or not. For those of you having trouble like me, if you go to library - application support - addressbook - sources

do you have 1 or 2 folders in sources? I had 2 (shown below). I have since logged out of iCloud on my Mac, deleted the address book folder, and then signed in. I now have only 1. I am curious if others with same issue have 2, and maybe its 2 sources trying to sync at once causing the issue?

quick update:

yesterday after it reset over the previous night, I went in and did the following:

  • deleted OneDrive off my iPhone (saw it mentioned, wasn't using it, figured whatever its clean up anyways)
  • updated 3 contact pictures: 2 on my phone through photos - assign photo to contact. 1 through iCloud.com

This morning, knock on wood, none of those 3 have reset. Previously was updating contact pictures through contacts app on my MBP and that was for sure reseting every night. knock on wood updating through my phone at least works for now and it can MAYBE be isolated to Mac OS.

Timeline wise I am starting to see this has happened to most in just the last few weeks like it did to me. Obviously something happened then to cause it and it seems the only thing we may have in common is MS Office. I use MS Teams, MS Onedrive as well along with Signal and Messages frequently. Of all of that along with 12.5 MS Office updated the same day, MS Teams not long after as did Signal and I had OneDrive issues with only 1 account after the 12.5/MS update so I blatted it completely (just deleting it didn't work) and started it all over again and I am fine since. If the rest of you can find a common cause then maybe you can find the solution. Also the HASH string it puts in records seems to indicate something is accessing Contacts when it happens because you might notice if you have set a contact record up with a picture, it changes some item types from "mobile" to "phone" as well. At first I looked for things that accessed Contacts like Signal - try the same - disable anything that accesses contacts for a while and try that. Other than that I dont know why I am working now over the rest of you.

The bit I don't get is why does it only happen 24-48 hours later and not immediately if its a pure sync issue because syncing is a constant. Something happens once a day overnight that stuffs it up. Yesterday I disabled (under privacy) anything accessing contacts on my devices which included Signal, Keeper and MS Teams and overnight none of the contacts have stuffed up yet. But it could still happen in the next 24 hours.
