Macbook Pro M1 USB-C cable and Android file transfer - fails to see device.

I have a Macbook Pro M1 / MacOS 12.4 and am trying to copy files between it and Android phone.

A USB-C to USB-C cable doesn't see the phone device for sync (only charging).

The same cable (Griffin 3' charge/sync) works fine to an Intel Macbook with USB-C (MacOS 10.15).

The M1 Mac will sync to the Android device if I use USB-C -> USB-A hub -> USB-C cables, but I was trying to avoid all those cables. Is this a cable hardware issue or a MacOS version ?

I tried the "Android File Transfer" app and also "Phone Mechani" app with the same result

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 12.4
