Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Update Failed because I need to be an owner of my own Mac

Trying to install the most recent update (Monterey 12.4) but I get this message: "Installation Failed: in order to continue installing, you need to be an owner". This has always been my Mac and I have never gotten this message before.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.2

What exact Mac is this?


Have you upgraded the SSD to a third party...(?)


Is your 11.2 your current macOS — the stable release of Big Sur is 11.6.7 I would get current there.


You can try running First Aid

Boot into Internet Recovery (Option Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities>  Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD (and the "Macintosh HD-Data" volume as well if Catalina/Big Sur/Monterey) If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.


Disk Utility>View>Show All Devices The best sequence is —

Volume level

Container level

Parent drive

You can try running your installer form Safeboot

SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support log in and try again




The current stable release of Monterey including bug fixes, is macOS 12.4

I will give these things a try this weekend. I have Monterey 12.0.1 on my 2020 MacBook Pro M1. I can't upgrade to 12.4 because of the fail message that I have to be an owner (of my own Mac). I don't know what an SSD is but I did not intentionally upgrade to a third party or down load anything that I know of, aside from documents, pictures, etc. I'm not tech savvy - use my Mac for very basic purposes and logging into my work server.
