The badge icon has stopped showing on the iPhone Messages app. All notification settings have it enabled so it should be working. I have an iPhone 8 Plus and it says it is up to date with version 15.5

Check if in Settings>Notifications>Messages you enabled "badge".
Should be this case, disabled it, restart your iPhone, then re-enable that option again and test it.
