2009 iMac 27" as monitor

I have a 2009 27" iMac and want to use it as a monitor for the new 13" MacBook Pro with the M2 chip. Can this be done and what cable do I use for this purpose?

Not with the new Mac you mention, no.

Target Display Mode is possible with old Mac and under certain circumstances. With your 2009 27-inch model you would require the following:

  • The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
  • The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
  • The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPort  cable.

See Use your iMac as a display with target display mode for the details.
