Mac Photo did not import photos from SD card and deleted card

I was trying to download the photos from our vacation from an SD card, using Mac 2012 (later half) and Catalina software. I clicked the import photos and also delete photos after import. I have no clue where the photos were downloaded to, but they vanished from the SD card.

Help!

iMac 27″, macOS 10.15

The problem was more with the OS and the card reader in my Mac. When I put it into the camera, I could see all the photos, and none was corrupted. So, short answer for me -- either buy a better SD card reader with its driver or buy a new iMac so that I have a more up to date and faster card reader.

Thank you for your advice. Very helpful.
