View My Pictures on a Television

I have a new iMac running Monterey 12.4

I have a new and up to date Apple TV box

I have the latest Photos app version on the new iMac

I DO NOT want to use iCloud for photo storage. I prefer storing my photos locally on a dedicated external hard drive.

I want to be able to view my pictures on my television. For years, this worked flawlessly with the old iPhoto which I continued to use until buying my new iMac.

I spent hours and hours on the phone with Apple support trying to get this to work. My tech was one step below engineer. We finally created a semi-complicated  workaround to get my pics on the television that works "sometimes". The tech concluded that this was a bug that Apple needs to address.

My question today is … are there any alternatives to Apple’s Photos app that will allow me to easily view my photos on my television?

I realize there are MANY posts asking about alternatives to Photos. I’ve read almost all of them. Again, my specific goal is to store my pictures locally and easily view them on my television in another part of my house.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: I use a 3rd party app File Explorer on my ATV, the basic version of which is free. The pro version works across all devices/computers on your local network. Both versions are ad-free and come with built-players/viewers, can recommend.

Thanks ... File Explorer looks like it might be what I'm looking for. I'll try the free version and report back.

Thanks again for all the replies and especially thanks to hcitas!

I’ve been using File Browser TV for a few days now and, so far, it appears to be just what I was looking for. As a test, I’ve created a small custom folder system for my pictures on my iMac. One folder called All Photos and within it there are sub folders called Vacations, Weddings, Holidays etc. From there I’ve sub-foldered them even further. When I open the File Browser app on my Apple TV it automatically shows me the entire folder system from my iMac just like in Finder. From there I easily navigate to the All Photos folder and am able to find, and show on my TV, whatever I want! … And it’s FAST!

Thanks for the replies .... I understand screen mirroring. I use it with my iPhone and iPad often. The problem I would have with using screen mirroring with my iMac is that the iMac is located in my upstairs office and the TV is downstairs in the family room. I wouldn't be able to control choosing albums and photos on the iMac upstairs from the mirrored screen downstairs.

I'll try the remote today to see if that works.

Regarding sharing the library: It worked perfectly with my old mac and old apple tv. The problem is now Apple wants everyone to use the cloud. I don't. I use a local external drive to store my media. After many many many hours on the phone with a third level tech at Apple we got it to "kinda" work. He told me it looks like an Apple bug and that he'd write up something on it for the engineers to look at.

Thanks for all the replies. Screen mirroring and AirPlay won't work for me because my computer and TV are on separate levels of the house. I tried both methods and there isn't a way to "mouse or swipe around".

So are ours. Being on the same network is what counts; different levels of a two story house doesn't matter.
