"this accessory is not optimized for this iphone"

Every couple of minutes this message pops up. Its disabled my sounds and my network coverage is now 2-3 bars max when it used to be full (I live in London). I updated my ios to 4.0.1 on Saturday. Before that no problems,

I'd been having the same constant annoying pop-up messages, audio toggle not working, and no sound when trying to play music. Tried hard reset, restoring settings - nothing. Then reverted to the compressed air/cleaning of audio dock - nothing. This has been driving me nuts, especially since everything was fine before upgrading to OS 4. Googled this problem to death and just as I was ready to give up: I tried the credit card method. Just inserted a corner in the spaces of the audio dock connecter and wiggled it around. Problem fixed - hallelujah and thank you!!!!!
Question still remains why this is happening in the first place; why Apple is not offering any help whatsoever; and why it takes such a MacGyver-style solution to fix it....

To add to Mikey's fix. It looks like the male flat pin at the phone's USB jack may have been slightly bent. The credit card trick works, but you need something with audio playing in the background so you know when you got it fixed. Play something in the background like your iPod, and use a credit card (the non strip side)to maneuver the male pin towards the back of the phone ever so gently, all while paying attention to your iPod screensaver. You'll notice the volume meter come back on your iPod when you do this. This will fix your volume/audio problem. Now it may fix it permanently or temporarily, depending on how bad the pin is bent and may have to be replaced eventually. Good luck!

I can't even power down- THAT doesn't work !

I have anew app-

Take the sims chip out and throw them all into the ocean.

I tried every fix described here, and nothing worked. I discovered a couple slightly bent pins. i took the tip of a sharp jacknife and pushed all the pins inward, cleaned the port with rubbing alcohol, let it dry for a couple hours, and pushed the charger in and out several times, and it did the trick.

Do at your own risk.

Also, there are small rubber inserts that you can buy to cover the port when not in use. They are $1-2 on the web. This will prevent the pins from getting bent again, or debris getting in the port.

Mikey has the right idea... A Lil blow of air in the dock connector and my vitamin world card did the trick along the pins is the fix to this problem- you will see the volume screen pop up and wala the phone is good as new! Guess from putting it in your pocket and all the debris that collects inside the port as well as plugging n unplugging different accessories could cause the damage a newbie can easily fix... One time using Mikeys way with my credit card and a Lil air had my phone up and running after hours of trying to fix the error without researching forever... I couldn't understand why but it was actually the easiest fix!! Thanks Mikey for your feedback' didn't want to waste a day at the apple store for them to do the same thing! Now my sound is uninterrupted and the phone is as good as new. I tried a hard reset which did " nothing " and like 5 other ways- Mikey is the man! Thanks again and good luck to all since it really is such an easy fix I don't see anyone running into any kinda problems. Be gentle when you slip in you card along the pins since I'd hate to see someone cause even more damage!! Good luck to all- Bware
