Why has my lock screen profile picture suddenly changed?

After years of using a particular stock image profile picture, I've just seen a different stock image appear above my name on the login lock screen. I'm afraid to type in my password in case I've been hacked in some way, so I'm posting this question from a different device. Please can someone advise? What is happening, and what should I do? Is it just a bug related to an OS update? Or something more?

Yes, you are right, thank you! Using the trackpad I was able to scroll down and select my usual stock image, and it then appears as my user profile image when I look at System Preferences, and also when I log in at appleid.apple.com (on a different computer using High Sierra). So that's the good news.

However, when I restart this computer (Monterey) to log in at the lock screen again, now the image is a generic person shape, and not my chosen image. I tried this multiple times, same result. If I choose an image near the top half of the Suggestions images (visible without scrolling down) it all works fine. But if I choose an image that needs to be scrolled to, it does save it, but refuses to show it at the login lock screen. I don't understand why, but at least I'm not worried anymore that I've been hacked.

Thank you, this is a good start and gave me the confidence to login with my password and explore further. It's still buggy though.

I logged in, and then clicked on the Apple logo -> System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> my user profile image (which was blank now) -> Edit. In the Suggestions folder, the usual stock images seem to be there, but the one I normally use isn't visible, because it's lower on the list and for some reason I can't scroll down to get it. There is no scroll bar, and the arrow keys don't function either. In the Photos folder, I do have a scroll bar, but in the Emoji folder the same problem, I can see there are more (the lowest visible row is half exposed) but there is no scroll bar so I can't access them. I also can't expand the size of the box to access them. I have Monterey 12.4 and it is up to date. I don't know what is happening or how to fix it. Do you have any ideas?

There's no scroll bar but you can scroll through the images with a mouse or trackpad.
