Red flashing sign on my refurbished gen 5 iPod when plugged into the computer its fully charged and in the correct usb terminal.

The hard drive has probably failed. See If you see a red X icon on your iPod classic or iPod nano (5th generation or earlier) - Apple Support (archived copy). Apple no longer offer servicing for iPod classic models. You may be able to find a suitable SD conversion kit.
