Extending displays using a MacBook Pro and Imac

Hello,

I have an old iMac that I want to use as a monitor for my Mac book. Unfortunately, I already upgraded it to Catalina. I know this would be easy if the old iMac was still on High Sierra or earlier. I try to reinstall High Sierra but the machine said it was too old a version to update. Is there an app I could install or something? I want it to extend the display not mirror it.

Thanks for your help

No can do. Target Display Mode (TDM)—now very dead technology— NEVER supported extended desktop, only mirroring. That was one of its major weaknesses. Downgrading your iMac's OS will not fix this.

Most users understand that only a few iMacs running High Sierra or older could act as a monitor for another Mac. What seems to get overlooked are the hardware and software sysreqs for the Mac SENDING a video signal to a TDM-supported iMac. The sending Mac but be Intel, 2019 or older, and running macOS 10.15 Catalina or older. Big Sur, Monterey are not supported: Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs are not supported.

The only way to get reliable performance and an extended display is with a regular external monitor. For te money you could spend on expensive cabling and adapters to get some Macs to work with TDM, you could buy a very nice external monitor that has no issues doing extended desktop

Sysreqs are here: Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

To the best of my knowledge, the oft-mentioned software workarounds do not do extended desktop either.

What is your iMac type? I have target display mode working on a 2013 iMac with Catalina and my 2015 MacBook using Monterey. make sure to use the right cable (mini display port for 2009/2010 iMacs and thunderbolt 1/2 for 2010-2014 iMacs )

For the install of High Sierra you can only do this from a bootable usb. Follow this steps to make a bootable usb with high Sierra you can do this on your iMac running Catalina

1 Download high Sierra here: How to get old versions of macOS – Apple Support (UK)

  1. make a bootable usb stick How to create a bootable installer for macOS – Apple Support (UK)
  2. Boot from the usb stick and install High Sierra
