external keyboard mapping doesn't match

hello,

Im running into something weird : my keyboard 'suddenly' (it was working fine) seems to have changed its mapping, and I can't get it back to work properly.

Im using a French layout (at symbol above the tab key on the left) : if I choose French as input source and load the virtual keyboard, everything seems fine (except the at symbol). see pictures.

however most of the time pressing a key on my hardware shows a different key being pressed on the virtual keyboard. if I press the shift+8, it works fine and writes 8, but without shift it doesn't write an exclamation mark, but a '=' symbol (normally mapped next to bottom shift). pressing this key will give me a '-' symbol, normally next to the backtab key...

has anyone ever seen something similar ? wondering if I did not accidentally hit a shortcut that shuffled everything...

Try switching your input source to French PC. Then @ should be on option ` over at the right edge. @ is on the missing key as it stands I think.

The mismatches you describe don't seem to fit any obvious pattern. Maybe try to get the machine to recognize the keyboard again. This pages may have some ideas:

Where did you get that non-standard azerty keyboard? It should have an extra key between W and left shift. If it did, your @ sign would be in the right place. What you get with unshifted 8 is really weird. Any other mismatches like that?

I suspect the only way to make the printing match the screen output would be to create a custom layout with Ukelele.

can't remember where I got it probably online. thing is it was working/mapping well just a few days ago.

yes, a lot of others mismatches :

unshifted 6 should write '§' but it actually writes '+', which should be shift+'=' (and this one writes '_')

the key above tab should write '<' (according to virtual keyboard) and it write 'ø' which should be opt+9 (and this writes 'Ç')

weird thing is don't actually see the alt symbol anywhere in the virtual keyboard
