Accents changed on keyboard, unable to return them to default

When I press Option+A,E,I,O,U, I get do not get the vowel with an accent, instead I get the following:

á ´ˆ ø ¨

The @ symbol has also moved from the 2 key, to the " key and vice-versa. I have tried to change the keyboard settings to default, but it does not fix the issue.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Thank you.

Go to system settings > keyboard > input sources and get rid of the item called British PC (or any other language you do not use). You should only have Irish on your list if you want option aeiou to produce áéíóú

For French, I use:

Option - e, then press e for acute: é

Option - `, then press a, e, u for grave: à, è, ù

Option - c, for cedilla: ç

Option - i, then a, e, i, o, u for circumflex: â, ê, î, ô, û

Option - u, then e, i, u for trema: ë, ï, ü

I can also hold down the letter key [about 2 seconds] then select required accent with corresponding number key:

My keyboard input source is as below [British]:
