Returning to Gmail from a link in an email

My iPhone SE is less than two years old. It has always let me return to an email from a website link that was in the email. Until yesterday, there was an arrow at the top left of the screen with the word Mail. Now that arrow says Search and takes me to a blank screen without any option but to push the home button and re-open my mail app.

So if I want to read an article in a daily email newsletter from the Times, say, once I click on it and go to it, I have to exit and reopen my mail app to return to the email newsletter. A time-wasting nuisance.

I haven’t changed anything in settings to explain this, and I can’t find anything in settings that might address the problem.

If you haven't already, restart your iPhone as restarting can resolve many odd issues: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

If the behavior continues, make sure you're updated as a software update was recently released to iOS 15.6. Software updates installs bug fixes and important security updates and could possibly help with this issue. To see what you have installed, tap Settings > General > About. Do you notice this happens with any link you use in the email app?
If you use multiple email accounts, does this happen with all or only one account?
