Apple mail Delivery receipts

I know that Read Receipts (Message disposition notification) can not be relied on to inform one whether a recipient has opened, let alone read, an e-mail and so I do not intend to try. However a "Delivery Receipt" (Delivery Status Notification) is useful in that it indicates whether a mailbox exists and, if it does, whether it is accpting e-mails (e.g. not full).

Can I request a delivery receipt or is it automatically handled?

Mail is a very simple app. What you have available to you is what's offered as an option. You can't add options to the app.

You can certainly request a deliver receipt from the person or place to whom you sent the email, but they are under no obligation to honor that request.

If the address is bogus, you generally will get a message back to the effect the email could not be delivered.
