MacBook Pro Notes Application Crashing

My notes application on an Apple MacBook Pro is crashing. I have taken the following steps to no avail.

  • I have Force Quit the application & restarted the Mac.
  • I have turned off iCloud Notes on my MacBook and then restarted.
  • Deleted cache by dragging all the contents in the mac HD/ library /caches to the trash folder then restarted.
  • Emptied Trash.

There was a suggestion by sberman (How do I restart or reinstall notes? - Apple Community) to move com.apple.notes to trash. However I did not find such a folder. Instead there were com.apple.Notes.datastore, com.apple.Notes.HTMLConverter, com.apple.Notes.LPPreviewGenerator and com.apple.Notes.NotesImporter folders.

There was another suggestion by macjack (How do I restart or reinstall notes? - Apple Community) to delete com.apple.Notes/Container.plist in the Containers folder . However I could not search for the Container.plist file.

Request help to get my noted up & running again.

Hi panda201,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! You've done some awesome troubleshooting so far! The Notes app is part of the macOS and therefore updates when the macOS is updated. Have you check to confirm there are no macOS updates that need to be installed? The macOS not being up to date can cause unexpected issues such as the one you are experiencing.

To confirm, go to the Apple Menu (  ) > System Preferences > Software Updates.

Thank you for your response Rob.

I think I have this figured out. The problem lay in the high volume occupied by the CoreData folder due to the images stored in it.

The solution is as follows:

  • Goto Library > Container > Notes (com.apple.Notes) > CoreData > Attachments
  • This folder stores the images stored on the notes. For some reason the size of this folder was 219GB.
  • I deleted the images from this folder (after taking a backup in another folder)
  • Restarted the Mac
  • The Notes worked (without the deleted images of course).

Note : There are 3 folders by the name Notes, the top folder is com.apple.Notes and this is of our interest. The other 2 are com.apple.Notes.SharingExtension & com.apple.Notes.WidgetExtension which are not of interest to us.

I had already taken the actions mentioned by you earlier but these did not help.

I suggest that apple looks at this. The images (screen shots) could be converted to a lower size to store in notes. Additionally in case of higher disk usage the Notes app should not crash instead it could render a small alias image in place of the original image with a message that the image size is too large.

Thank you for your support. I hope this helps the other community members as well.

Thank you for the reply panda201!

Let's see if this occurs in safe mode. Starting up your Mac in safe mode can help us determine whether this issue is caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up. Take a look here on how to start your Mac in safe mode:

Also, the actions outlined in this article may help us isolate the issue:

Hi Trish,

Thank you for your response. There was no change in the behaviour even after updating the macOS.

One possible reason I can think for the notes to crash is that once during a course, I had pasted a few screen shots on the notes which may have made one of the note files very heavy.

Is there a way that I can access the files so that I can delete this particular file.

Thank you for your support.
