iPad Air 2 to Air 5 Quick Start Failed Transfer, Solved

Both running iOS 15.5 (I think, afraid to check while they are transferring). Failed twice. Got through the touch setup and activation of ApplePay credit cards. Then "iPad unable to complete data transfer, the connection to your other iPad was lost."

Maybe I'm about to jinx the transfer now in process. Previously did not reboot my Air 2 before starting the Quick Start procedure. This time I also rebooted the Air 2 while the Air 5 was reset/wiping itself from the previous failure. Failed Quick Start gives no choice but to reset the entire Air 5 no matter it seems to be at least partially set up with working Touch and ApplePay. I have 3 texts stating my CC was added to ApplePay.

I will remember in the future to reboot the source iPad before transfer as this is the first time I've seen the transfer display and progress bar. 16 minutes to go!

Both Air 2 and Air 5 are 64 GB. My Air 5 is not yet listed under "My Devices" here.

Actually got through the many steps of setup then transfer failed to start. Complete reset of the Air 5 twice. Only after 2 failures did I think to reboot the Air 2. Third time the transfer started and ran to completion. I was about to contact support before thinking to reboot the Air 2 and try again.

Hello David Kelly1,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like the transfer is making progress this time, which is great!

These steps might help if the issue happens again during the transfer: Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

We hope this helps to isolate the issue so you can complete the data transfer.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Cheers!
