Upgrade from Catalina to (Monterey or Big Sur?)

My iMac 27" Retina (Late 2014) is running Catalina 10.15.7. Confused about which system is the next to upgrade to: Monterey or Big Sur?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.15

Big Sur is the latest version you can install.

Good. But just need to know if I should go to Monterey first, instead of skipping directly to Big Sur.

Monterey came after Big Sur. You can't install Monterey.

Monterey came after Big Sur. You can't install Monterey since you have a 2014 iMac. You wouldn't be skipping an OS's but even if you were to skip them it is perfectly fine to do so.

your Mac is not compatible with Monterey. Go to Big Sur.

Monterey is newer, so no, you cannot get Monterey but you can get Big Sur
