Optimized feature doesn’t work on my iPhone 7 even after updating to iOS 15.6

OK, here’s Apple’s Knowledge Base article on Optimized Charging→About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone - Apple Support. There’s a section for why it doesn’t work, mostly about settings that need to be enabled.
Also note that for it to work reliably you need to put the phone on to charge around the same time every night, and remove it around the same time every morning. This doesn’t need to be exact, but if your schedule varies significantly from day to day it can’t “learn” your habits.
